I’ve had dreadlocks since I was 7 years old, in 2nd grade my parents let me decide what I wanted to do to my hair. I saw dreads & I thought they were beautiful. I loved my dreads for as long as I had them. Now after almost 12 years of having dreads, I cut them off. It was a bit emotional for me but I realized as you grow up you become a completely different person. I’m definitely different than I was when I was 7. My hairstyle was the only thing on me that hadn’t changed in over a decade (except for the array of colors it has been dyed over the years). I used to think that the hair made the girl; like the longer the hair the prettier the girl was. At a point I actually believed I would be ugly with short hair. I quickly grew out of that silly idea. Some of the most beautiful women on the planet are bald or have short hair, luckily I know some of these beautiful females personally, seeing them really gave me the added confidence I needed to go through with cutting my hair. I look at this as a stepping stone into adulthood, strengthening my confidence. Now when you look at me all you’ll see is me, no more long hair to hide behind. I will miss my lovely dreads though.
